Struggling to pay your tax because of Covid-19?

7th May 2020 Tax Payments

There is a big tax due date coming up on 7th May 2020.

IRD have advised us that if you cant pay your tax on time, because of corona-virus, they will not charge late penalties and interest, as long as you have informed them beforehand.

If you cannot pay your taxes on 7th May because of corona-virus, please contact IRD immediately through correspondence in your online myIR portal. We suggest something like, “Sorry but I can’t make the payment by the due date because of corona-virus. I will contact you by the end of June to discuss payment options”.

This will give you some breathing space to get back on your feet.

Please note that IRD have lowered the threshold for installment arrangements set up in myIR.

The new minimum repayment rates are:

  • Weekly $20 (previously $50).

  • Fortnightly $40 (previously $100)

  • Monthly $80 (previously $200).

If you have any questions, please email us and we’ll do what we can to help.

Remember that it is important that we still file the returns (this particularly applies to GST) by the due date. This is important as it gives us (and the IRD) a picture of exactly what the tax debt is.
