THE EARLY YEARS ────
Where it all began.
A small school in Tokomaru
Bruce started school in Tokomaru, where he shared a classroom with 120 other children. It was a close-knit community and a very different start to his education.
Next Chapter
When Bruce was about 12,
his family moved to town, and he began attending Palmerston North Boys' High School.
Bruce played rugby and studied a range of subjects, including accounting. When a local firm needed someone with strong accounting and computer skills, they approached his teacher for a recommendation, opening the door to Bruce's career in accounting.
He suggested me,” says Bruce, “which was interesting because I used to wag accounting and physical education classes, and go to work at the garden centre in the afternoons. I thought, well I’ll take the job, and if I don’t like it, then it’ll stand me in good stead for another role. And here I am – it’s just kept going.”
FAMILY FIRST ────
A business built around family.
Balancing the duties of a major city accounting firm with having his kids on weekends proved to be a challenge.
“On Fridays, I needed time off to pick up my children. So I went home to Tash and said, 'Let's start our own firm,' and she replied, 'Let's do it,' and we did - despite the fact that I only had one client at the time."
At first, Bruce ran the company from a garage office on a hill in windy Wellington. The southerly often blew under the roller door, sending papers flying off his desk. This was the beginning of Simple Accounting Services, a name that reflects the company’s focus on keeping accounting simple.
More than just numbers.
At Simple Accounting Services, we believe quality accounting should be efficient, personal and affordable. After working with larger Wellington firms, Bruce saw an opportunity to give smaller businesses the personal service and support they deserved.
